Check it out! You might qualify for the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP)

You could get a monthly, on-bill credit of $35 or more. The Government of Ontario has changed the eligibility for the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP). So now, more Ontarians qualify. The credit amount depends on how many people live in the home and the combined annual household after tax income.
The OESP provides an ongoing monthly credit directly on electricity bills. Eligible customers receive monthly credits of $35 to $75. The credit amount is based on household income, the number of people living in the home, and energy use intensity.
Effective March 1, 2024, the Ontario government will broaden eligibility for the program by increasing its income eligibility thresholds.
The new income eligibility thresholds for OESP will reflect Canada’s 2020 Low-Income Measure (LIM) making thousands more households eligible for bill relief.
The updated program thresholds will allow a four-person household with an after-tax income of $65,000 (increased from $48,000), or a couple with an after-tax income of $54,000 (increased from $39,000), to be eligible to receive the OESP on-bill credits.
Recipients will still be required to re-apply for program assistance every 2 years or when their circumstances change (e.g., moving or a change in income).
Recipients over the age of 65 or receiving a disability benefit under the Canada Pension Plan will still be required re-apply every 5 years.
Question: I previously applied for OESP and my application was denied because my income was above the threshold. I am still struggling with my hydro bills. What can you do to assist me?
Answer: If a customer has a bill in their name and their after-tax household income is under the new program eligibility thresholds, customers may submit an application for OESP assistance on or after March 1, 2024.
More program information can be found at: ontarioelectricitysupport.ca or call 1-855-831-8151 (toll-free within Ontario)
Beware of energy scams: Home energy assessments, audits, inspections and home visits are not required to apply for the OESP.
